A Week In Lilly: Day 5

Friday, June 26, 2015

Day 5: June 26

Outfit details: Shirt - Old Navy ( I can only find  the maternity version, but I swear they have a no preggo shirt in stores) | Jean Jacket | crops | heels - Tory Burch or it's sister here (both on sale!)

I have a few more Lilly Pulitzer dresses I was wanting to wear this week in the office but it is casual Friday in the office and I found an urge to wear this shirt that is so cute it makes me want to be on the sailboats. I found this top at Old Navy on sale for $5. I couldn't resist. It appeared as though Old Navy's summer collection is trying to give Lilly a run for it's money.

P.s. The Tory Burch wedges are deeply discounted!! I can only find black online ( I got mine from Bloomingdales last summer on sale).

A Week In Lilly: Day 4

Day 4: June 25th

Outfit details: Cover up | Dress from the Lilly for Target line (similar styles Lilly Pulitzer or this) | Wedges | Alex & Ani Bracelet Stack - 1 2 3  4 5 6
You can take the girl out of Florida, but you can't take the Florida out of the girl. In my office I am pretty lucky I can get away as being that girl from Florida and expressing my style in yet a professional manner. I was able to make this look be appropriate for two different settings. It's the perfect length in the office but its also light enough you don't melt during the Pro/ Am NWA Championship. Y'all, Lydia Ko said hi to Kyle and I! I was a little start struck and didn't get an autograph.

I get so many compliments on this dress no matter if I am here in Arkansas or in Florida. Unfortunately it is only available by those crazy ebay sellers because they sold out in stores with in 10 minutes of open. The good news is, I am still seeing items pop in my Target, including this dress that I saw this week. It was misplaced in the kids section but ladies there are some items lingering. Keep your eyes out and your hopes high!

A Week In Lilly: Day 3

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

Day 3: June 24

Skinny Jeans | Lilly Pulitzer Coral Top ( I scored this at the Lilly Warehouse Sale last year but these are similar here & here) | Jack Rogers Sandals | Ray Bans | Michael Kors Watch | Michael Kors Handbag (on sale!)

If summer time were to have a signature color, it would be coral. I adore coral on sunkissed skin, which unfortunately I am not blessed with and not daring enough to invite skin cancer to the biggest organ of my body. However, it is still a wonderful color for the season! I scored this top at the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse sale, but I made sure to share some similar styles by Lilly. If summer time were to have a hair style it would totally be mermaid waves with a splash of sea spray.

Join me this week in the Lilly movement. Share your styles that are Lilly Pulitzer inspired with #aweekinlilly on instagram or twitter (retweeting is very likely)!

See you tomorrow my fellow mermaids!

A Week In Lilly Pulitzer: Day 2

Tuesday, June 23, 2015

Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink.
This afternoon I finally get to attend my first day of the LPGA to watch the practice rounds with the pros! This day is also an opportunity for the members to meet the players and get autographs. A favorite to us Arkansans is Stacy Lewis, who is a former Razorback Golfer. I am hoping to meet Michelle Wie, who is my favorite in the LPGA. Lydia Ko was out on the coarse practicing this morning, whom is the youngest in the tournament (to my knowledge). Im excited to give updates through the week!
Day 2 : June 23

Outfit Details: Dress - Lilly for Target SOLD OUT but similar style shift here Lilly Pulitzer | Shoes - Jack Rogers | Bracelet - Alex & Ani | Sunglasses - Ray Ban

P.S. Come join the fun of Lilly lovers with hashtag #aweekinlilly to kick off the first week of summer!

Boring Chicken No More: Asian Sensation Chicken

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

"Boo, I have to eat plain chicken again!" says almost every fitness competitor. It doesn't matter if you are prepping for a competition or just want to drop a few pounds you no longer have to say this on repeat every meal, every day. I present to you my go to, hands down, low sodium obsession in the form of protein; my Asian Sensation Chicken.

What you'll need:
  • Chicken breasts - 2 breasts suits the flavor best for the recipe. However, you may want to consider increasing if you are prepping a lot of chicken and decide you want to incorporate it in your mega meal prep.
  • 1 tbsp. Minced Garlic
  • 1/2 tbsp. Sesame Seed Oil
  • 1 tbsp. Rice Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. Bragg's Liquid Aminos
Cooking Instructions:
Wash hands first. With meat tenderizer, play whack-a-mole on the chicken breasts. Then dice up the chicken and add the above measurements into a skillet or baking dish. Then cook thoroughly.

You can cook this on the stove top (my preferred method) but there is no reason why it can't be done in the oven. I think the skillet gives it a little browning and more taste. In the oven I have experienced a greater loss of moisture and the flavors don't blend as well.

Another trick I sometime add to this is 1 squeezed orange or lime.

Viola, you now have a prep approved chicken that it much better than boring flavorless cardboard may taste better chicken!

My Least Favorite Day for the Gym

Monday, June 15, 2015

Is there such thing as a least favorite day at the gym? Of course there is! It goes by the name of Monday. Why don’t I like the gym on Monday you ask? It’s quite simple the crowd. I love people watching, don’t get me wrong. But, the crowd is awful and I find myself wasting more time looking for an open machine or weights than the time it takes me to get a quick circuit in.

Skipping the gym on Monday doesn’t mean it’s your hall pass to Lazy Town. There are alternatives to being active without the gym. Here a list of some gym free options:

1.       Go for a run.

2.       Join a sports league – my fiancĂ© plays softball with other Walmart vendors ( I go as a cheerleader and bring the dogs to walk around the park)

3.       Walk the dogs.

4.       Clean the house.

5.       Mow the yard

6.       Shovel snow.

7.       Meal prep for the week.

8.       When all else fails… SHOP

For rainy Mondays, I challenge my brain. I blog, film or edit YouTube videos, usually cook and clean.

What do you do to stay active when the gym is not an option? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Comment below or email me barbellesandcurls@gmail.com

Summer Beauty Sale at Nordstom!

Friday, June 12, 2015

Summertime and the make up is sweat proof, bullet proof, and oil free! As a born and bred Floridian it is always summer but after a year living in a state that has all seasons, I am excited to be reunited with my favorite products I used on a regular basis with hot, humid, sweat prone weather. I am even more excited about the SALE at Nordstrom. They have currently adopted the idea of price matching and it is bound to save some dollars and makeup meltdowns. Psst.. another secret is there is no minimum order for free shipping!

I would like to take you into my make up routine with these items but there are several so just click on over to my youtube channel where I have several tutorials using similar items in the same routine. I must praise how much I use blotting sheets through the day and keeping my make up in place with the All Nighter Urban Decay spray, I swear by it!!! Summer is for shimmery eye shadows, brighter lip stick, and water proof products to stay fabulous whether you are at the pool, concert, or walking to your car in the heat.

I must also preach sun safety! I've linked a few great moisturizers with SPF that are tinted. Ladies its better sooner than later to accept this into your daily routine to avoid wrinkles in the future. I must say I love a matte moisturizer but I prefer a matte look since I am an oily goddess. For a nice golden tan I love St. Tropez hands down. I use it two to three times a week with the mitt and people think I live on the golf coarse and always ride around with my convertible top down which with my career history in skin cancer isn't the case.

Packing for Vacation & Wedding Decor Haul

Sunday, June 7, 2015

I cannot believe it's our last and final trip before our wedding. This weekend we are so excited to attend a family members wedding on Clearwater Beach, Florida. A month ago for my bachelorette weekend it was extremely hot and humid which I haven't experienced in about a year so this trip I packed more accordingly. While we are in Florida I plan to make a couple stops for wedding decor that I am unable to purchase online and save on shipping. I also have packed most of what I have bought and packed in one of my carry-ons so we have more room in the car when we drive down for our wedding.

I had a little strategy planned for this trip which was to pack as much as I can without breaking anything or having to check a bag which would definitely lead to breakage after witnessing many times how airline toss luggage around like hacky sacks.

With my wedding decor all laid out and a roller board carry-on (which has a strong frame), I took the biggest items first and wrapped them with clothes I was packing. I also placed undergarments inside the sea urchins so I don't waste space. I got these really cute sea urchins from Target, in the garden section from $8 - $10 depending on the sale here is the link to it, when I could find more, and the cartwheel app discounts. I'm working with a florist to find the perfect bloom to go with this. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! Side note - sad to discover peonies are out of season in October.

However, all of my Home Goods finds fit perfectly in the suitcase when I had to let go of the fact packing all of the urchins just weren't going to happen. I got the mercury seahorse candle holders for $2 each. I got the sea horse candle stand for $6.99. I got the gold seashell picture frame for $3.50 on clearance. If you haven't gotten the hint yet my wedding theme is mermaid inspired.

Now on to the Florida style, it is a no brainer to pack light weight clothes, tank tops, Lilly Pulitzer, and bright colors. It is finally my time of year. Arkansas people don't get that my wardrobe was meant for summer year round.
The weekend wardrobe consist of:
Yellow stripe tank top
Beach Wedding: Sea Urchin For You Dress - Lilly Pulitzer for Target - SOLD OUT :(
Day 3: Lilly Pulitzer for Target pink eyelet shorts

I adore summer styles and can't wait to share my next summer style post. Stay tuned!!

FIRST HOME: Deciding to build or buy

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Kyle and I are really excited for another chapter to add to our book of life with in our biggest year of our lives. We are very blessed to have the opportunity to build our first home and planting our roots in Northwest Arkansas.

We would have to admit we love investing and planning for our future. It was logically sound to get away from renting and purchase a home. We did not think when conversations first started that  we would be building.

Some major objectives that we thought about prior to making a decision to begin shopping in the market are as follows.

1.       What neighborhood/ Town do we like most?

2.       What are our requirements or must haves for a home?

3.       What is our budget?

4.       How much do we need to save before we can start shopping?

5.       How long do we plan on staying in the house? (In our area, due to Walmart Headquarters we could get relocated, which Kyle’s boss gave his blessings on staying here for a while. Another reason is starting our family and will we have enough room.)

6.       When do we want to move?
I highly recommend thinking about these questions as you start considering shopping for your first home. Once we answered all of those questions, with the biggest factor of when our lease will end on our current house, we began shopping around. Our absolute favorite thing in the process was Zillow! Zillow is an app that syncs with your GPS on your phone or tablet and shows houses where you are located with the price, information on the house, ratings on features of the neighborhood, and school zones. You can also search by zip code, name of neighborhood or town, and even drawing a map and it will show you houses for sale. We would take random drives around the area and when we found a neighborhood we liked we would pull up Zillow on your phones and see what houses have sold for and what is for sale to see if the house is even in our price range.

After spending countless hours looking at houses, we kept coming to the same conclusion on every house that was in our budget. It was good but it needed work to be exactly what we wanted. Which DIY projects can be delayed due to procrastination, money, resources, and it isn't included in the mortgage. We ended up going back to the first neighborhood we visited our first weekend in Arkansas, which is newly constructed and had plenty of open lots available. We got to pick everything exactly how we wanted, everything is new so it reduces the need to have repairs, and it offered features that existing homes do not. The most important part of our decision was it had everything we wanted and under budget.

Check out my video where I dish on the details of the process!!

Year 1: Living Away From My Hometown

Monday, June 1, 2015

It took 23 years to get me to move away from my hometown in Sarasota FL, and I only did it for love. When I was first presented the opportunity to move to New Jersey with my boyfriend that accepted a job offer, I really had no clue what I was in for. A college senior finishing up my last semester before graduation, I decided to take the rest of my classes online. I packed up my little Mazda2 full with enough room for Zoey, my Australian Cattle Dog, and we were off to Tampa to meet Kyle at the airport and begin our road trip to our new home. Okay, with a planned visit to DC.

Moving out of Florida was exciting and also gave me a lot of anxiety. I only knew Yankees as slow, old, and rude living in the biggest retirement area in Florida. With money saved and interviews lined up we were on our way for our new chapter. My first week in New Jersey, I was addicted to job search engines. My first and only interview was a success and I knew it was the job I wanted most in my line up of interviews. I worked for one of the best plastic surgeons in the New Jersey and New York area. I got to travel everyday for the job, and help people feel better about themselves. Although I lacked the socialite life, friends, and money (because the cost of living was ridiculous), I still felt like I was living a season of Gossip Girl. Literally, it only last three months until Kyle got promoted and we were moved to Arkansas.
Pretty much sums it in cronological order.

When I say Arkansas, I mean Bentonville the home to Walmart Headquarters. Moving took place 4 days after my graduation with my Bachelors of Health Science. In Arkansas, if you want to be successful, it requires a business degree. The bad thing about having a health science degree and 4 years experience as a medical assistant was there are not enough doctors to have a territory for medical sales in the area, the cost of living is lower so I had a few interviews where the offer was too low to accept, and jobs are scarce. I stayed positive and after a few interviews where I denied the offer, I accepted a job as a hospital administrator for a long term care hospital. It just so happened to be part of the corporation I made rounds with the plastic surgeon in New Jersey for wound care. Only 2 months in I met my managers wife, she was looking to fill a position, and my boss knew it was a better path and much bigger opportunity to excel.
The very first Walmart right in my backyard.

After the first day on the job as a Contract Manufacturing Sales Project Administrator on the medical team, I took Kyle out to dinner for his birthday. As we were walking to the restaurant in the Bentonville Square, I found myself looking at Kyle get down on his knee asking to be his wife. What a whirlwind of a day. The next couple of weeks, I was fumbling through my new career path and on lunch breaks flipping through bridal magazines. I decided on a style of dress I had in mind and found sample sale to check out. All by myself, first in line, I was rummaging through dresses where I spotted THE dress. I will touch on the event in a different post. However, with facetime, and texting my mom and maid of honor gave me the green light and I came home with my wedding dress. A few weeks go by and both our parents came to visit for Thanksgiving/ Christmas. When they landed we skipped our route home and took them to a house we had our eyes on that was for sale. That weekend we took them through a few model homes by a builder we liked and they encourage us with the decision to build was best for us.

The last week of the year we made our deposit to begin building, and to this date was are now in the phase of finishing up the drywalls. Update* We are four weeks from closing on our house. To this date I am also wrapping up my wedding vendors to book, with just a makeup artist and florist to book.
